Mongonui Decr. 8, 1870 My dear McLean, I enclose herewith for your perusal some private notes which I cannot make use of publicly, but which I think you ought to see they will I trustexonerate me from any neglect of duty, I was fully persuaded that Mr. Kemp had authority to attend to these cases, and I have been led throughout to believe that certificates had only issued for Tekerau and Waterangi. I am surprised that this was not found it in the communications had with the Chief Judge who was quite aware that the land in question belonged to Govt. through a letter I myself wrote to Dickey and which he informed me he read to Fenton, I hope and trust this will be the last difficulty I shall have of the sort, I have felt it very much. In showing you the enclosed letters I must beg of you to return them to me as I do not feel authorized to do more than show them to you, though they ought not to have been private notes. You forgot to send me an authority to draw my pay as Crown Agent I trust it will come before the end of the quarter as I may get into difficulties the salary had been drawn by me before the Estimates came down I wrote about it officially November 4 No. 35 and also a mistake in the Native assessors salaries R. Greaves and Te Waka October 25 No. 34. I am sure it was not your intentions to a cut my salary down at this time which is of so much importance to me not only as to my time of service but my family is so large it is as much as I can do to make both ends meet and I am quite sure I could not refund the salary over drawn supposing it was not intended I should draw the £600 per annum besides I always console myself that you would not exact an onerous duty from me without giving me the quid pro quo Believe me, My dear McLean, Yours faithfully, W. B. White
