My dear Sir, Captain Norman, of the Victoria, called to see you this morning and was sorry to hear of your illness. Before leaving Taranaki he took a cruise south of the Sugar Loaves and observed a party of armed natives (2 or 300) with their bundles about 2 miles south of Oakuru, proceeding in the direction of Tataraimaka. Cap.Norman reported this at New Plymouth on his way here. If the weather changes for the better, the Victoria will return to Taranaki tomorrow morning at 10 -- if not she will be delayed a day or two - The Airedale will not be leaving for a few days -- I send your private letters not wishing to trouble you with officials until I hear from you. Mr. King, of Kawhia, wishes to know whether he may be allowed to take a native vessel to Kawhia to fetch away his traps. I held out no hope but promised to mention his application. Hoping you are recovering I remain Faithfully yours H. Halse Dec. 3/60 D. McLean Esq.
