Mission House, Wdy. Eveg. My Dear Sir, Our neighbour Billings and his wife havg. lately reverted to their old trade of annoyance, I drop you a line to know, whether as Inspector, you cd. not advise them to a more suitable behaviour so long as they remain on the Section, wh. the Governor advises me will only now be for a few wks. This afternoon, as our cow had strolled over the bridge, to the Sec.No.4, when Sarah Barrett went to milk her as she stood on the public path (a rather private path) Mrs.B. ran down to her and struck her with a stick over the shoulder makg. the part swell and the girl cry. When she told me I went over to Manihera (who works at Rindlers machine) and told him and Poharama to go to Billings and his wife and advise them to keep their hands of the girls, because we shd. not allow them to be struck. When they went she took up a cudgell to strike Manihera with, wh. he of course wrested from her, and flung away, when the old man ran up with his scythe, and lifting it, threatened to "tapahi the kaki of the bloody d-" etc.etc. Poharama, thinking he wld. strike with it, told Maunsell to take it from him, wh. he did after some resistance, and brought it away to the Station. Of course I sent it back again immediately by a native. The cursing and oaths wh. the man and his wife used to the natives were dreadful, and I shall be heartily glad when they are gone, for it is too bad to be treat like this. I wish you cld. do something wh. wld. bring these folks to their senses, but if not, then we must bear it to the end. Truly yours, H.H. Turton. D. McLean Esq
