I am not entirely without hope that the natives may show some disposition to sell. I have very little time to devote to enquiries and less to visit individuals and learn their sentiments. Two thirds of my time being taken on the raod. I am decidedly of opinion that good would result from a careful sifting of the opinions of the Upper river natives who are the real opponents to sales of land and these people I rarely ever see; at Nuhaka also and at Nukutaurua I think that land might be obtained. Of course I have not hinted at any desire to purchase but have merely sounded the views of such individuals as I have reason to believe favourable. Much care and patience is need in an investigation
