To:- D. McLean Wellington Sept. 22. 1868 The Bishop held service at Pahwhakiro on Sunday and only saw one Poverty Bay native there. Thinks the returned Chatham Islanders have gone to join their fellows with the horses sent to Tongoio. I referred you yesterday to my telegram to Stafford about Paora Hapi have just sent you a copy with one from Bishop. The natives here certainly believe that an attack on Napier will be made this month and are preparing. Is there treachery in our midst, about Pahwhakiro and this potato planting at Tongoio. We have 300 No. 1 2 class Militia men without arms. (Signed) J. Rhodes.
