The training of the Militia does not occasion any excitement amongst the natives and I think good results would follow if it were more general. I suppose we could turn out 500 men capable of bearing arms, a respectable number in accordance with the natives. The Hinia natives are still anxious that the Mangaraka should be sold. Mahau tells me that the offer has his support but that he is afraid other natives might offer the land between Mangaraka and Waiongaua. A letter from you to him will not be thrown away, in the meantime I am gradually getting him into harness.
