Pohui Novr. 1st 1866 My dear Sir, I write you a short account of what I have done since you sent me here - On the Thursday afternoon that I left Napier I rode as far as Mr. Parsons - engaging at Petane two men first taking the advice of Gapt.Carr - This makes four with the two Mil.Setts.that I brought from Napier. Since I have been here I have patroled the road as far as two miles beyond Te Haroto - also the tracks towards Moko moko - and Waitora (a deserted village about seven miles down the Mohaka river from the crossing by the church). I found the tracks of two horses, between Te Haroto, and the church ford; and also between Te Haroto, and Waitara; all these tracks went off towards Taupo - these had evidently been ridden horses as the tracks kept the road the whole way and had only gone to the fords before mentioned, and then returned. I suppose them to have been scouts as there were no signs of their having halted at any place - from the church ford I should have gone up the river in the direction of Te Wetus place which I hear is about seven miles off, but rain coming on I was obliged to come back here - however I will go today, taking the track by the Waka - I am told that Te Wetu has gone to Taupo with his men (who number abt. a dozen) and they have not returned - The only natives that I have seen here have been two very old ones belonging to Petane, these I tracked in the Titiokura bush - I gave them some food and advised them to go back to Petane which they have done. They were well known as friendlies by Villers (one of the men I have with me). No fires are to be seen beyond Te Haroto or Waiparti or in any direction accross the Mohaka river - I daily patrol all the trails abt. here, and keep a lookout at night - so that in case of any natives shewing themselves I shall be sure to send early information - believe me dear Sir to be yours very truly Jno. St. George His Honor D. McLean Esqr.
