I submit that it would be most desirable to meet Te Manihere's views in this matter; and thereby secure his influence and co-operation. A pension of £50 a year settled upon this Chief would also be money well-expended; as it would insure the services of an active and intelligent assessor in the Wairarapa district, and permanently attach him to the Government. It would not, however, be judicious to grant Manihera a pension, unless other Chiefs of equal importance, such as Ngatitueri, Hiko, Ihaia te Watamairu, Te Wereta, Hemi te Miha, and Wiremu te Potangora, have also annuities equal in amount, settled upon them.
