Memorial to Sir George Grey, dated 1851. Turanga September 1, 1851. To His Excellency, Sir George Grey, Governor and Commander - in - Chief of New Zealand, etc. etc. etc., The respectful Memorial of the undersigned, most respectfully herewith, - That your Memorialists have been generally on good terms with the native inhabitants; but latterly they, the natives, have become much excited, and entertain most erroneous ideas of the value of their produce, payment for depasturing cattle, and for vessels entering the rivers. That in consequence of the above, with many other causes of complaint, there has latterly been much, ill feeling between both races. That in order to set matters (if possible) at rest, some of the influential Chiefs requested your Memorialists to attend a meeting at which it was considered that both parties should most respectfully address Your Excellency. That your Memorialists trust Tour Excellency will advise the natives whether the course they wish to pursue is just or otherwise; and appoint some authorised party to adjust all disputes that may occur between the natives and Europeans in this district, - or such other course as Your Excellency may judge proper to pursue.
