Auckland July 8, 1870 Dear Maclean You remember that the authority for John White was only till the return from the Chathams. I shall not want him any longer, as I have two, and propose, if possible, to contract operations a bit in future. But I think such a good interpreter as he is ought to be secured and I would suggest that you put him into the office of the Commissioner here or somewhere for it would be a pity to lose him. Yours very truly F.D. Fenton P.S. I have written to all the suitors (Te Hira and the rest) and told them that I would postpone the Ct. on acct. of the inclemency of the weather which has been frightful - and our folk had to live in tents, papers wet, etc.
