Napier August 27 /66 Dear Sir I have just received your letter of the 17 of August. The Surveyor you speak of has arrived also two from Auckland. Wm. Graham is one son of Mr. G. Graham in the House of Assembly who says that he was sent for by you, The other is a son of Mr. Busby former British Resident in New Zealand - I wrote to you the other day from the Mahia to the effect that there must be some confiscation for the Natives are waiting for it - etc. Mr. Ormond has been up since my absence and done something in the way of sending in applications for land to be tryed by the Court which is now under offer to the Govt. As I don't know which lands he may have applyed for I cannot send in any application. The only two that I know of that are not published in the present list are Tareha's pieces adjoining Napier (why that is not advertized I don't know) and the Ngapuhi block for which an application has gone in. The Court has finished all the cases brought before it exceptingTarewa, which is put off till next sitting. I am anxious to hear what is to be done with the east coast, for if this province is not to get the district it ought to be settled from here. Letters have been received from Pohipi, Paora Huri Waka and others to the effect that Anaru Matete and others were at Maungahururu and that they intended attacking this place I have not seen Tareha myself yet so I can not give an opinion, But old Ihaka will be here I expect to day and then I will find out all about the case - the steamer is going - I remain, Dear Sir, Yours truly, S. Locke. D. McLean, Esq., Wellington
