Monday, Nov. 10, 1856 My dear Sir, I feel deeply sensible of your recommendation of me to the Governor which has added another to the many kindnesses I have received from you. The removal of a family is generally objectionable and I cannot conceive a time more so than the present, when I should have to sell my property at a great sacrifice and accept 6 months bills which are not always paid when due. This perplexes me seriously in any proposal involving my removal. The appointment you mention as being likely to be offered to me is in every way desirable but this, and one that I had no reason to expect. Had I only myself to consult there would not be a moments hesitation but Mrs.Halse dreads separating from her family, particularly her father and mother who are advanced in years and enfeebled in health. I shall however have a little further time for reflection before declining an opportunity that may not again occur and one that I could not again expect. If however any alteration can be made to my salary - forage allowance for instance as Assistant Native Secretary - I should in deference to Mrs.Halse's feelings prefer remaining here, particularly as the days of our present rulers are numbered.
