Auckland 26th June 1863 My dear Sir, Here I am again promising to myself to write to you every day and putting it off hoping to hear something new to tell you but beyond what you already know of the great attack on the Pa south of Tatara - and the arrest of Aporo in Auckland there is nothing new here. I have seen Graham about the Stove and he says that only one man can make it in Auckland and he is away at present, he has written to you about it himself, but anything that I can do shall be done - I have spoken to Friend about the forage he says you sold the Horse and went South or something of that kind, but promised to give me a written explanation of the circumstances which I have not got yet. He has however been kept busy lately with accounts. You will see the Militia are called out in consequence of an expected attack from Waikato. Charleton has been ordered away from Kawhia, nearly all the Raglan men have left and we are fast drifting into a state of war in this Province which will be most disastrous to the place and ruinous to thousands your humble servant included. I should like to get you a copy of the Waitara papers but they are in a dark corner not obtainable by me. Parris told me while at Taranaki that O. Carrington had made statements contrary to fact which suited S. G. G's purpose and the deed was done - Your requisition for £1000 has been approved and I hope everything will go well with you at Hawkes Bay and keep you from the horrors of war. I have great pleasure in congratulating Campbell on his appointment of R. M. I have not yet been able to get the £10 from Sanson although I dunn him for it every time I see him. The English Mail is in and it is expected that War will ensue with North America. This will be bad for us in New Zealand - Friends explanation enclosed. All well at Mount Albert - Halse sends his aroha to you. When are you coming up again. Yours ever J. Rogan
