Napier June 3, 1870 Sir, I have the honor to submit to your notice, 1. The Copy of a letter to J.D. Ormond Esqr. upon the subject of a Grant in aid for the erection of buildings for the Te Aute School. I may add further on this subject that Sir George Grey acknowledged to me that the original stipulation made with Te Hapuku and others, when they gave their portion of the land, was that the Government would provide for the erection of the buildings. 2. An application made by Archdeacon Williams for a church site in the township of Gisborne, and also in the township at Wairerehua is still pending. I hope that this application will receive the favorable consideration of the Government, inasmuch as the whole area laid out for the townships is much larger than is likely to be occupied. The objection that other denominations will follow with similar applications I cannot see to be valid. I am of opinion they should be agreed to, if bona fide occupation is taken, and places of worship erected within a specified time. I have suggested that in the township of Gisborne sections 123 and 124 should be granted, with liberty also to purchase sections 131 and 132 at the upset price. If however the Government will not make a free grant of what is asked for I then request that permission may be given to purchase the said sites at the upset price. 3. The Survey of a block of land at Pouparae has been duly made with the Attestation of the Surveyor General, and the late Major Biggs, and the objections formerly made by Wi Pere and others have been withdrawn, as attested before the Resident Magistrate, I have to request therefore that an ordermay be given for the issue of the Crown Grant. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedt. servant William Waiapu To:--The Honble. The Native Minister
