1865 Sunday My dear Sir We arrived here at about 7 a.m. and landed the Natives at Whangawehi. I thhought it better to send the Steamer back at once, for the sooner you can manage to come the better, I am sorry Mokena has not been behaving quite so well as he ought in many instances, his party and I believe some of the Tuparoa Natives have been doing a little pillagin on their own account and have destroyed a good deal of property, European and Native in fact his Mokenas bearing is anything but pleasant. Some prisoners about 40 are to be brought to camp tomorrow. Mokena wanted them to be given over to him first, to which I objected, he waived the matter upon my talki to him on the subject however. Of course there is a great deal of exaggeration in the Settlers account of proceedings but still I think the sooner you can come the better, to set things straight, I have put a stop to everything until you arrive. Hotene told me this morning that he intended returning home at once, he however told me a few minutes since that they intend following up the fugitives to Waiwa if necessary, but as you are so soon expected he will wait till you arrive. On the whole things are not so bad but that everything may be set right wiht a little trouble. A very bitter feeling seems to exist between the Ngatiporous and the Turanga natives which should be at once stopped before more harm is done, but as I said before, you will be very easily able to make it all right. I think the sooner I can get back to the Wairoa the better in case the fugitives get there. You will excuse this hurried letter but I am very poorly and feel quite unable to write. I am Sir Faithfully yours S. Deighton.
