Uplands Omata Feby. 1st. /57 Dr. Sir, Bush Farming has been such a failure with me in Taranaki that I am inclined to try another profession in another settlement. If there are any inducements in Auckland, or elsewhere in New Zealand, that you can recommend I feel assured you will do so. Walter is not quite a young man and my two eldest daughters are fast approaching womanhood. The care of a sheep station on shares, or otherwise, or any situation would equally answer my purpose. I have advertised the whole of my property in this week's paper but at the present time I fear will realise but little. I am sure I need not say how grateful I shall be if you could suggest, or help me to obtain the means of bringing up and educating a family of seven children. Hoping to secure a few lines from you by return of the steamer, I am, dear Sir, Yours very truly, Thos. Wayth Gudgeon. P.S. I think of running down to Wellington to see Mr. Clifford consequently a letter of introduction from you would assist me much. I intend taking my Testimonial from H. M. Inland Revenue Officer with me. Mrs. G. desires to be remembered to you and hopes yourself and son are quite well
