Wellington, Sep. 11, 1865. My dear McLean, Will you kindly have the enclosed letter to Karaitiana translated and sent unless you see any objection. Weld wished me to write it. I had no time to have it translated here. We are determined to put you into sole responsibility in your district. Ormond says you think of coming up for a few days. I think you should not leave your district till after the Opotiki expedition has succeeded. We are very anxious about not having to extend operations Sir G. Grey shewed me your letter to him. I have told him we will not sanction the employment of any troops if he does so it will be at his own responsibility and at the cost of the mother country. The Army, officers and all, seem thoroughly demoralised: we must and will fight out this battle ourselves. If Opotiki succeedscannot Waru and Mokena sweep down the Coast to Turanga. You are the best judge of this. We leave it all to you, but in a military as well as financial point of view we want to see few armies in the field not dissipating our strength and money by small isolated bodies not strong enough to do more than defend forts. I suppose you see they are attacking us pretty strongly in the House but we have a majority at present. I have sacrificed a great deal to take office but having done so I confess I hope I may be allowed the chance of shewing whether I am only a theorist and article writer. I heard Hapuka was coming to Wairarapa, but he did not come would it be any good my writing to him? Tareha I have talked to - I will write to him next mail. If you think it mischivous to send my letters keep them till you write to me. I shall be glad to hear from you and to help you in every way. Yours ever, James Edward FitzGerald.
