Colonial Office 26 Jan. 1861 Sir, The Duke of Newcastle is obliged to leave London, and has directed me in forwarding the enclosed letter from the Duke of Cambridge to the person to whom it is addressed, and which is purposely left open for your perusal - to inform you that it is in answer to a letter purporting to come from Toetoe, who being on the date of his letter at Government House forwarded it through the ordinary channel of the post instead of through you as Governor. As the Duke of Newcastle thinks this circumstance suspicious he requests you to be good enough to satisfy yourself of the genuineness of the letter in question before conveying this reply to its destination. I am Sir Your obed. St. G. D. Engleheart Colonel T. G. Browne C.B.
