Russell 8th Augt./57 My dear Sir, Tangi is a man of importance if a flag is sent to him let it be through me --- that I may explain --- all that is necessary on the subject to him. Rangatina and Hapimane have not been gazetted as Assessors --- it should be done --- names of appointment in the Maori Messenger give great consequence. I have prepared some of the chiefs for the removal of the Troops. Tamate Waka appears delighted that so much confidence will be placed in him but remarked that it would be necessary to increase the number of assessors --- I told him the Governor wanted to do it and look upon the assessors as his soldiers if they should be required at this the old fellow was almost mad with joy. The Troops I suppose will not be removed for some time but whenever it may be all all we must do for peace and good order is to appoint and pray the assessors. Yours very truly, James R. Clendon TH. H. Smith Esq.
