Hamilton. Waikato. February 13th. 1871. Dear Mr. McLean Wi Patene returned from Te Kopua on Saturday; where he saw Whitiora. Whitiora told him that 50 men had come to his place to "tiaki" him from the Europeans. Huirama had been sent by the King party to order Tapihana back to Kawhia, with his 12 men. Whitiora agreed that Tapihana should live at Pakanui, (near to Hautuna), where he was to be quiet. Whitiora says that as the King party have put up a store near Te Kuiti, he will open Kawhia to Europeans to trade. Barton did not hear of anything about Rewi and Matutaera "pukanaing" at each other. The Kingites are all afraid that they are to be attacked, on account of Todd's murder. Hence they do not allow anyone to pass the Aukatis. Rewi has demanded the murderers to be given up to him, that he may meet Te Makarini at Te Kopua, and hand them over. Tamati Ngapora is the leader of those who refuse to give the murderers up. Rewi, Wiremu Kumete, and Matutaera, are the leaders of those who wish to give the murderers up. See two native letters enclosed, 1 and 2. I copy a letter sent by the Officer commanding, to Tamati Ngapora, respecting the Natives who fired on the two men at Alexandra.
