Auckland, April 29, 1847. My dear MacLean, I just write a few lines to tell you we have arrived safe after a most pleasant trip we got to Moutukaramu on Sunday, next day we reached Mr.Millers place he has been very ill they behaved very kindly we had some dinner with them and got 10 miles further that day we remained one day with Mr.Buddle, what a beautiful place it is. The Waipa and Waikato country is superior to anything I had expected to see, altogether the trip including to days stoppage took us 13 days Mr.Erijah we found rather troublesome he was formerly a slave to the Waikatoes and he amused himself by taking us round to settlements out of our road, I had to box his ears for being very impertinent, There are rumours of wars to the south Rangi has begun some of his tricks I should not be surprised if I am sent down soon Atkins is an ass, but I have seen little of him as yet, the Governor is so busy about the rows in the south that I have not done any police duty though constantly in communication with the Governor - I can scarcely tell you if I like Auckland for I have scarcely seen it I will write to you more at length in a few days - I have ordered a Cap for you remember me kindly to Wats and Halse and all friends at Taranaki and believe me dear Mac Your sincere friend W.B.Whitly. Ligar desires to be kindly remembered. I am staying with him until it is settled whether I go to the south or not.
