Tuesday Nov.11th /67 Dear McLean, I add a line to my former letter to tell you what the understanding I had with Cobb was - I write in consequence of hearing from Weber that he will not get the Mail Contract to Waipawa - or the horse contract to Porongahau - My agreement was that he was only to be required to perform the service once a week unless he got the mail contract - the second service to Waipawa was only to be done if he got the mail contract i.e. He was for the £30 a month to run once a week from Napier to Porongahau carrying the mail - If therefore others get the contract to Waipawa Peters coach will not need to make 2 trips there in the week he cd. not do it for the money - In reference to the second mail service (weekly) to Porongahau we the Porongahau people will be quite ready to give up the second weekly mail - If we do so however - We should like Cobb and Co. to run on the same days the regular mail goes now - i.e. leave Napie Tuesday get to Waipukurau. Leave Waipukurau Wednesday get to Porongahau and Return next day getting to Napier on Friday. If this were done we will readily give up the present horse mail service between Wai pawa and Porongahau - that wd. save abt. £80 a year - I have spoken to the people down here and they will be quite satisfied with the one service done in the way I say - But not if the Coach has to wait 2 or more days at Porangahau before returning. You can see what you can do in the matter. With this reduction in the service arrangement may be easy. Yours always J.D. Ormond
