"Wairoa" April 30th 1868 Sir, I beg to inform you that I have as fully as possible ascertained the views of the opponents to Hamana's proposed sale of the 'Wa hui Tara' Block to the Govt., and the case may be summed up in the following manner. Hamana is recognised by all parties as having in right of ancestry a principal title to the entire Block: and under the old system could have sold, and divided the payment amongst the subordinates according to his view of their respective interests - The Lands Court having opened the door to a more formal recognition of these rights, the holders insist upon being dealt with separately - in respect of their individual claims. 'Hamana' caused the first survey to be made of the entire Block, and it was then leased to 'Corbin and Davis' the division of the money for the rent created dissatisfaction, and various claims being sent in the land was subdivided into several blocks a process it is still undergoing and may continue to undergo for an indefinite time and to an unlimited
