Wellington July 2nd. 1868. My dear McLean, I have just been with Richmond and he has asked me to undertake the duties of Commissioner to investigate claims for compensation on the E. Coast. I intended returning by the Steamer today but I fear that I shall not have time to do all I have to do, and they never told me anything of it till I said I should leave today. I now wish to inform myself thoroughly on all points connected with the duty --- in which case I shall have to wait for the next chance of getting back. Major Edwaras who lost his appointment at the time I did has been given the same work on the West Coast. Stafford and Richmond have both been most kind. I think it is still intended to bring Cooper down here. Ever yours J.H. Campbell.
