My dear Carter I find that several of the people here evince a desire that I should allow myself to be nominated as (Supt. as I have told you and some of the electors constituents that I had no desire to prejudice your election) While at the same time if a majority should desire me to take it I should not feel justified in resisting their wishes while (I should distinctly not only not oppose you but on the contrary assist you in every way if the majority decided in your favor, I wish this distinctly to be understood to avoid mischance as I should not like at this stage of the elections to leave an opening for a third party to come in I should be glad to have a line from you in reply
