Auckland, July 14, 1871 My dear McLean, The Luna it is said will be despatched on Tuesday next and will call at Tauranga; Clarke who is here will go back with her. I have your Telegram about Te Wheoro's going to Te Kuiti; I did not say , in fact, but rather left it to him and when he heard that it was only to discuss Te Aroha from Manuhiri's point of view he stopped on his way and returned. Paora Toke has settled the question of his location by going to Wairoa. He objects to Waiheke altogether and talks of Waikato but that I think will not do at all. Heaphy will look after his settlement. I sent you some contradictory Telegrams from Waikato the other day; it is explained by Hans Tapsell who was at Te Kuiti that the stopping of the mailman took place before the meeting. Hans thinks from what he saw and heard that Waikato means fighting in the spring and this is the common sentiment amongst the Natives. Nevertheless Rewi does not perhaps want a row and may be strong enough to regulate Manuhiri and his side. If so all will go well. The Aroha is a difficulty and I think that Marutuaho will have to compromise matters before all is done. In my recollection there never has been such weathe as we have had for the last six weeks, a succession of storms and rain. Influenza is very prevalent and I am a victim myself today. Yours always, truly, Daniel Pollen. There are a number of compensation claims upon Beathams senond investigations outstanding which must be proceeded for by the Assembly. Amongst them are some of Ahipeni Ruihaus and Hori Tauroas at Waiuku for Canoes etc. destroyed by the Wilder. Provision should I think be made in this session. Perhaps you will keep it in mind. D. P.
