(undated) Dear McLean, To my mind a very sad thing has happened here - the acquittal of McCaskill. The evidence was very clear, but I am told on good authority that the jury had made up their minds for an acquittal within 1/2 of an hour after they were sworn. Could anything be done for getting a mixed jury, though I fear that would be no improvement. How absurd their idea of "done in self-defence", is, when judged by the fact when the natives had McCaskill on the ground with his gun empty, they did nothing, although one of them had had his chim blown off. You will find mischief come of this. There is a break-down of the Telegraph, so I have told them to send this by return of post. Yours truly (Signed) W. Martin.
