(undated) Dear McLean, To my mind a very sad thing has happened here - the acquittal of McCaskill. The evidence was very clear, but I am told on good authority that the jury had made up their minds for an acquittal within 1/2 of an hour after they were sworn. Could anything be done for getting a mixed jury, though I fear that would be no improvement. How absurd their idea of "done in self-defence", is, when judged by the fact when the natives had McCaskill on the ground with his gun empty, they did nothing, although one of them had had his chim blown off.
