Napier 27th. July 1866. My dear McLean, I have just posted an official letter to you with a Maorie petition from beyond Waipu and other enclosures. I hear (Kennedy Capt.) has got a long petition with 14,00 names to it on board. I have desired Mr. Eannin to see it posted today by the Egmont which sails at 3 p.m. This will complete the petitions from the coast, and I hope you may be able to use them with effect. A plan will be sent by Carter today to rmond to back up any action in the annexation movement. Although you did not mention the fact of finding the lost petition I see you did present the same. A letter of 13 Inst. has just reached Withers directing him to send the St. Kilda to Poverty for Biggs' men - this is a pity as the St. Kilda is here with the Forest Rangers on board and if I had any voice in the matter she should go on to Patea with her freight at once. It is nearly time for clearing the mail. Could you get the "Act" proclaimed in the Province for the Protection of Birds, as there is no natural impediment now whatsoever. Your house looks desolate now on the hill. Yours truly, Joseph Rhodes.
