everything favors the idea. I do not think that anything more can be done for our safety so far -- I have organised some combination amongst the Chiefs in case of attack, and we must take our chance -- You do not say that you have had any further, communication from ''Wellington'' respecting myself. I have nothing beyond what I have already said, to urge upon the subject -- I should be I dare say of very nearly as much service to you if out of Govt. employ but I would like to know as soon as may be what the upshot is to be -- The depression amongst the settlers here is very great, these last murders have produced more alarm than anything that has yet occurred.
