Poverty Bay. 29th. July 1865 D. McLean Esq. Dear Sir, We are about the same as when you left; all anxiously waiting for you. I think Hirina is sorry for the part he has taken with old Lazarous, and would like to turn round. But the last time I spoke to him he was still for the flag to be taken down, and those people to leave their Pa. There has been a split with Browning and him altogether. The feeling seems to be in favour of the Queen, but I would not recommend your giving any arms to people belonging to this place at present. Mr. Harris is unwell, but no doubt will recover in a few days. I beg you will accept two cases of apples. I remain Yours very truly (Signed) G.E. Read.
