August 8 1860 My dear McLean, No remark was made on my message about a renewal of the conference and the subject will not be debated until Friday. It is also very doubtful if any reply will be given this week. What is to be done? I doubt not that the House will accede but they will not reply at once. Deeply as I shall regret your absence I know well that it is absolutely necessary you should go to England and as soon as ever the war gives us a moments
