May 11th. 1865 My dear Sir Everything is pretty quiet here now - but I was awoke last night at about 12 oclock by the night patrol with a most alarming report to the effect that the Hau Haus had all returned to Matiti mustering about 400 men that the war dance had been danced and that an immediate attack was expected, the cause of which was on account of some silly rumour that had some how got abroad that I had sent or was going to send some Pakeha among them to take likenesses of the pricipal chiefs that they might be recognized at some future time and be apprehended. I have despatched messengers up to Matiti to find out what truth there is in the affair but they have not yet returned, but from what I can at present learn it appears to be a fabrication from beginning to end. The Natives here are much dissatisfied with Dr. Scott having no medicine and have complained to me about it. Dr. Scott tells me he has sent on the requisition some time ago and he believes the medicines are at the Chemists. I have mentioned the subject to you at the request of the Natives I am My dear Sir faithfully yours S. Deighton.
