Huangarua, May 12, 1861. Dear McLean, Mr. Richmond Beetham has informed me that he has written you asking for the appointment vacated by Mr.Searancke and upon hearing this I determined to write you urging his pretensions. I have known him some years and have found him intelligent and very steady and industrious. His manner, bearing and feelings are those of a gentleman and such as will I think take well with the natives to whom he has always been very kind and for who he entertains very proper feelings. I really think he would make an excellent officer in the department to which Mr.Searancke belonged - and hope it may be in your power to comply with his wishes. Believe me, Yours faithfully, Samuel Revans.
