Private Monday 11 Oct. /58 My dear Sir, I forgot to tell you that Henare is still in Wellington and Wi te Ahoaho at Mimi. I have not been able to learn that there is a native here who witnessed the execution of the Deed of Sale in Wellington, this however appears of no importance as Paki and Horomona (one of Puni's men) treat the Deed with contempt ''Kia mutu taku kaki'' was the beginning and ending of their korero. Hone spoke well but failed to move them and Raniera reminded them that the expression ''kia mutu etc.'' was used by himself in former days and yet he sold the Hua. Mahau went across the room to Paki and Horomona and recommended them in an exceedingly quiet tone to use soft words, and it was after this that they agreed to write to Henare and abide by his decision. Perhaps they already knew what that decision will be - in the mean time they are ploughing away with 12 men, and planting potatoes as fast as possible. With regard to Tamati Te Ito, I am inclined to think the visit to Waitara the other day will do him good - and hope you will approve of the oppy. taken for making him acquainted with the expectations of the Govt. should he seriously commit himself in future - I hear old Rangi of Tapuae is dying. Faithfully yours H. Halse P. S. I did not receive nga ture by the last visit of the steamer, so I suppose they were forgotten. H.H.
