Melford Cottage, Napier 4 June 60 My dear McLean, One word. The surveys as far as I am concerned are completed, of the three blocks between Arapawanui and Waikari altho' it is likely I will be obliged to go back relative to the reserves of which as usual there is a mess. The map will be completed by next mail and as Cooper is going to Wellington about the 10th inst, I will get him to do all necessary before he leaves. Tom has of an independent appointment as Engineer but only as a thing intended and privately. I however fear the rascal, but do not mention this to any one not even at Dedwood. Tom is very ''hard up'' and hard presse Sealy has already lent him money and Tiffen is mixed up with him in monetary affairs, Tom is getting very unpopular, nothing holds him together save only the strong combination of the Runholders to attain their end (which Tom knows well they never will do) in the House of R. Tom seems to be gathering information relative to Native affairs, and I fear me that he is helped by one in the camp of course being interested about the natives and finding out how they may be benefited? at the public cost will be eventually the means of the niggers from His Honor any wheat. There is a good roadway made from Clive Square to the Saddle of what is called Milton road. This is a great advantage to your Sub-section. The Revd. Peter Barclay is getting on well and our English Minister is a regular brick. I will clear out of the N.L.P.D. the end of this month and may God speed it and its chief. Believe me my dear MacLean, Ever most sincerely, M. Fitzgerald.
