Colonial Secretary's Office Auckland November 1st. 1848. Sir, In returning the enclosed accounts, forwarded with your letter of 7th. ultimo., I have the honour to acquaint you that those preferred by yourself for £3.15.1 1/2, and on behalf of Messrs. Taylor & Watt for £6.11.11 1/2 for expenses of the natives employed by yourself and Mr. Symonds in settling the Land Claims at Wanganui, are approved; but His Excellency can only authorise a travelling allowance of 5/- per diem, in consideration of your having been, during the period, in receipt of an allowance in lieu of graze for a horse.
