New Plymouth, Dec. 5, 1859. My Dear Sir, On Tuesday last I paid Teira and party an instalment of £100 for their land at Waitara, in accordance with the recommendation of the Governor. Previous to doing so I sent word to the Waitara natives, informing them that the payment would be made that day. Wm. King with about 30 followers came up to repudiate the sale of the land. I prevailed on them to discuss the question with Teira ma in the presence of a large audience of Europeans, which they did very orderly. Wm. King admitted the superiority of Teira and party's claims, but said he should oppose the sale of it, upon which I asked him to explain his reason for doing so, and the justice of his opposition. He evaded this question, and merely said, it is enough, their (meaning Teira and party) stomachs are full with sight of the money, which you have promised them, for the land they have set afloat, but I will not consent for it to be sent to sea, but will take possession of it and cultivate it. The Maori Kings Flag is now flying at Waitara, which Wm. King also professes to repudiate, from motives of diplomacy (I believe) lest the Waikatos should again lay claim to the land - and on the other hand he allows the Flag to be used, by others hoping thereby to intimidate the Government from purchasing it. Previous to the commencement of the discussion I read the boundaries of the land, with the remarks attached to the same as per enclosed copy. Teira and party are all in Town stopping, not I considering it safe for them to remain at Waitara after havin taken a payment for the land. Hoping to see you soon, I am My dear Sir, Your obdt. Servt. R. Parris.
