Private. Duplicate. My dear McLean, The Superintendents and Mr. Fox have informed me you are anxious to purchase a ferry at Manawatu (I think that is the name) and they consider it absolutely necessary or most advisable that the purchase should be made. I authorise you to do it, though I hope the amount will not exceed one thousand Pounds. I place myself in your hands to do what you think necessary and advisable. The Chatham Islands have been sold at Sydney (under protests from the Land officer) for under £100, but I think we shall be obliged to do something about them. Dr. Sinclair wants you back at Auckland, I want you here and the Nelson people want you at Waitohi. Yours very truly, T. Gore Browne. 3 Decr.,/55. P. S. If you determine on making the purchase of the Ferry make application in due form for authority stating the reasons and I will give it, but in the mean time act on this. T. Gore Browne.
