You will have heard of the doings of your gallant Col. Whitmore in this quarter. I have a run leased from the Natives, some time since he came here and endeavoured to upset my arrangements and obtain the run for himself, not failing to state the position he held in order to frighten them into his terms. However in full runanga they rejected him and told him it was already in my hands. He then wrote me a note saying "he found I really had a claim and as he would be sorry to interfere with anyone he relinguished all idea of obtaining that particular run" or words to that effect. Well the other day he can back again endeavoured to obtain the same ground and actually did get a lease or something of the same sort under from two natives Rangi Whaitiri and Rapata Whakapuhia of the very same ground he had said he would not interfere with and these natives had already signed my deed. This may be viewed as honourable conduct in circles. Among us we look on it as quite the reverse. I cannot designate such conduct as other than ungentlemanly and unmanly in the extreme. He will not obtain his end as the natives say "what are two men against one hundred of us". Ever yours J. W. Harris. By the bye with it he will to move again in the annexation matters? I see Rice says parties names were affixed to the last without their knowledge. Whose and by whom? 12 March /67 D. McLean Esq.
