[1844] McLean, To inform you of the things I, my father and relations have got in payment for the land: nine blankets, six kimana[?], one half of tobacco, two kegs of powder, one [of] butter, four red rari[?], two gowns, handkerchiefs[?], trousers. That's all. There was one lot of these, at Puketapu. From Piripi McLean, This I have to say to you. Now, the parts of land given to you, I agree to this that a Pakeha settle on that part of the land. But there is a place I would like to retain for myself, for me alone, and for ever after, that which I myself like. My suggestion to you is that the parts of the land of my ancestors at Puketapu be for the Pakeha. But of my own parts, I will speak to you. And when you hear that, you can consider it, or write [to me]. FromPiripi [Note on same page] 'Acknowledgement of payment received by the natives for land. Piripi. 1844.'
[1844] E Makarini, Kia kite koe i nga mea i au, i taku matua, i aku whanaunga o nga utu o te whenua: e iwa nga paraikete, e ono nga kimana, kotahi awe tupeka, e rua nga kaho paura, kotahi pata, e wha rarihate whero, e rua kaone, akiti[akitiwa?], taraute. Heoi ano, kotahi taupu o enei, no Puketapu. Kia rongo koe, mau e titiro, e tuhituhi ranei. NaPiripi
