[At top] 'Copy' Ngamotu 21 October 1851 Friend, Tamati Hone, Greetings to you. Sir, Hone Hinu, greetings to you. Sir, Hamahona, greetings to you and the others. Sir, Rawiri, greetings to you all. Sir, Honi Te Pakeke, greetings to you and your youngest ones. Listen to what I have to say to you and it is not a trifling statement that I want to make to you. If you heed what I have to say, then I too will heed your word. It is not that my statement is to offend you but I speak to you about what is right. Stay away, don't consent to the ways of the world, but think about the words referring to the beginning [of the world?] because if you have claimed a mountain as sacred to God, then you too are all sacred. So too then are the parts of your mind sacred and its workings, and [your?] joining together and discussions. Don't make these things profane, what is sacred should remain sacred. Stay away, don't come here. Why would you rush needlessly here to this flag? The flag is not erected to signal the taking of land. No. It is a signal for ships, it's a sign of the Pakeha, for they erected it at Whainganui [Whanganui?], in their town, on their land bought with their goods. Listen, my elders, my friends, to what I say. It is not the Pakeha who have orphaned me, no, the Maori orphaned me - that is why I live without parents. For me there is this, that I will continue to depend on the Pakeha for my defence, for ever and ever and ever.
