Monday 2 Decr 6 AM You will see by the date my dear Susan that I have resumed my early rising. It requires no great effort to do so when I have anything to attend to. This morning I leave for the East Coast and have taken the opportunity before the Duncans get up to steal a few moments to write to you. From Papa's note I fancy you have not been able to accomplish the Waikanae trip. If you have sent me a journal of your adventures to the East Coast. Papa will tell you when and how to send. I am most anxious that you should attend your religious and historical reading, not in a trifling putting off way but in sincere reality determined to improve your mind and establish your faith on the unchangeable principles of Christianity. Dress and everything connected therewith however necessary that you should be neat and tidy, is quite subordinate to the proper nourishing and clothing of the mind. When you have no other young companions take up your book determined to remember and improve by what you read. "Where there is a will there is a way" and a persevering good girl will always improve notwithstanding interruptions & obstacles. Goodbye, yours Always Donald McLean
