Mokau. 12th Sept. 1845. Dear Sir The bearers John Holland and natives will return to this place in a few days. Please to let them have the pikau of calico and salt, wh. you were so kind as to receive for me from Mr. Spencer. We arrived here on Wednesday morning last week. Mr. Sherington was rather unwell and slept part of that day, but towards evening found himself better and left the following morning tolerably well. Mrs. S. had been a little anoyed by the natives, one of whom (who was building a goatshed for me) because he was not allowed to run in and out at pleasure opened a window and entered that way. I thought that he rawa and so did the natives who had allready so far interfered as to forbid him to come near Mata while I was from home. Himself, a lad of about 12 years, in co. with his father, called to receive his utu for the goat house. I said first I must pay you mahi kino and accordingly gave him, I think 8 lashes with a karawao. Everybody except himself for he fought with all his might consented he had only received his due. We cannot patua mahara, said they, but only when we are riri. It is the first time I have done such a thing, and perhaps I old. not have done so before as I believe it wld. have brought a taua and tho' they never so much deserved a threshing, I trust this will prevent a repetition of such liberties during my absence from home. Mr. McLean, says my wife, will keep me under obligations to him. Thanks for your kind presents, and with our united regards I remain, Yours very truly C. H. Schnackenberg.
