Huangarua September 3rd. 1853 Dear McLean, Your note to Captain Smith arrived here last night and I opened it in his absence. Smith left this for Wellington last Monday and intended to be back tomorrow or next day. So soon as he returns I have little doubt he will as you request proceed down the valley to see you. I think if it be really important to get any surveys done at present and you ask Captain Smith and the office can provide him with instruments he would go to work at once for you, but this matter had better come from yourself. Though I shall be absent and shearing time is coming on he can be spared as Tully and the boys can manage all station matters quite as well if not better than the older folks. I do not know whether your natives will succeed in getting the map in question from Northwoods. But if they have it not possible Smith will be able to take one with him from this place, as he had one though I know not where to seek it, or failing th other being obtained I would send it. Wishing you every success, I remain, Yours faithfully, S. Revans.
