Tauranga January 18th. 1871 To the Native Minister, Friend, salutations to you! This is to inform you of the troubles inflicted upon us by the laws of the Native Land Court. , there are many men who have received Surveyors' Licenses from the Government. That is why the Maori people each employ his surveyors for the one piece. , That is why these surveyors do not listen to any one who is against their surveying that piece, and it has given them the power to charge high for surveying land. When that piece is taken to the Court to be adjudicated upon, and the right claim is given to one of these men, and that man pays his surveyor, the other surveyors who surveyed the same piece, they ask payment also from the persons who employed them. The law is that the person who requests a hearing for land, and the person opposing the claim, each pay a pound a day, That is why some people do not care to make know their title to land in the Court, as others take the land. - The lands for roads, for which Crown Grants have been issued by the Court :- 1st. The Surveyor has been paid for surveying that piece. 2nd. The Land Court is paid for its work. 3rd. That small piece is all gone with the road 4th. The laws of the Native Lands Court of 1865 - 1867 - 1869 - have not been translated into Maori. . That is why we do not understand about the Interpreters who have Licenses. That is why we have no knowledge about the Surveyors who have Licenses. That is why we have no knowledge of the arrangement of the Native Land Court. Sufficient. From us all (Signed) Hoani Tukuraru. Petera te Pukutua Matene te Huaki. From all the Arawa.
