Mount Albert April 21 1865 My dear Sir, This is the only sheet of paper I have at Mount Albert and I am writing by candle light so that no obstruction may come in the way of scratching a line to you in Town. The Govr. has decided on my being permanently stationed at Kaipara. The Native Lands Act works well at Kaipara but your humble servant has something to do in that and except from yourself I dont expect to get much credit for this. Fenton and I are as usual mustard and pepper but we get along well as regards the work which is the principal thing. My mind has been at ease since some of the '200 Waikatos have returned to their own country, and am happy to say that that arero hua, Ta Kerei and his mob are about to go back. Do you recollect a report of the Ngapuhis rising about Ngunguru. There was truth in that. Mohi te Peke sent word to Old Ti to that effect, Tirarau replied Oh yes; go by all means and remember, take the women and children but hearken you will never return, the land shall the Govrs. I shall sell all and not only that a barracks shall be filled with soldiers at Ngunguru in a fortnight this stopped the expedition. I am glad to have the opportunity of distributing the newspapers &c. I shall send you a reminder next month touching 12 mos. Int. on the £600. Yours very sincerely, J. Rogan
