. . . A tribe subdivided into Hapus is one, and cannot allow its integrity and strength to be impaired by the independant act of one Hapu. . . W. King is the acknowledged Chief of that portion of the Ngatiawa at Waitara. (.) ''I have before stated that the right of the tribe extends over the whole of that block, therefore W. King is one of the claimants.'' (.) ''It is impossible for me to state, without the boundaries being defined, what portion of W. King's claim is within the block. . The Chief Roporima was recognised as the head of the Hapu who owned the land sold on several occasions. It was contemplated by the natives of Waitara to revolt than to live amongst followers of this Chief. In this argument W. King acquiesces. (continued.) ''I have heard that about 60 acres on the South bank had been left out as belonging to W. King. . Te Teira belongs to Ngatihinga and Ngatituaho Hapu and Te Patukakariki is the Chief. . ''I know the country, viz.-- reference to Patukakariki; Roporima at Queen Charlotte Sound, represents the Hapu. . ''I am prepared to prove that there are 100 persons now living at Waikanae Queen Charlotte Sound, and Mapaere Bay, having valid claims. I believe that there are 90 out of 100 claimants who have not consented to the sale of the land.'' (. ''What I have stated on this subject'' (viz. -- that of 90 claimants) ''rests on the authority of others.'') . ''I have referred to one man who may have a claim,'' that is Patukakariki though I do not know that he has.'' . ''I do not believe that any considerable claims can be outstanding. Patukakariki did not oppose Teira's offer. (Query, --) who have not consented to the sale of the land." . ''He has never made a claim. . ''But he may have a claim to a small extent.'' . ''He, replied that he was not prepared to take compensation, or be forcibly driven from the land inherited from his father.'' Enquiry has been made by Mr. Clarke as to this report, which appears to be false. A man named Wipero was the murderer, and was afterwards killed at Taupo. The assertion that the Ngatiwakane made peace with the King Party is nonsense. Henare and Petara Pukuatua and Rewi Tereanuka visited Tokaugantuta, and there is no mistaking Petara's advice to Matutaera, - ''If you find that any of the Kumera in your rua are going bad, sort them and throw them away, lest they contaminate the rest.'' This occurred before Todd's murder. Since then Ngatiwakane have kept aloof from Waikato, and would not attend the last Kuiti meeting, because ''blood was on the hands of the Waikatos!!''
