Wallingford June 5th /63 My dear McLean. A boy from His Lordship has brought me yours of the 1st inst. I am very glad to hear such satisfactory intelligence as it contains. Whitmore's mission is a very good step and meets every advice I could give you were I with you. In all other respects too I cordially agree with the courses you have taken. About coming inland it is of no great importance and altho' I urged it I explained to you at the same time that it was not really urgent, but perhaps expedient, if you could have managed it. I quite agree however that the chief native tikana is in your immediate neighborhood and that no opinion even wd. be come to by the inland natives without their concurrence. I write these few lines as the boy goes back in the morning and I hear His Lordship is going down to meet the steamer on the eighth. About the Impounding Ord. there is no need for immediate action - there are many pros and cons - let it stand over until I come down when we can think it over together - Have any steps been taken towards getting timber for building a place at Waipawa - I suppose I ought to call it a barrack and refuge house. Dont you think that Weber ought to see and get that much prepared without delay. Yours always J. D. Ormond.
