Clyde December 10th. 1868 Sir, I have the honor to report, for your information, that a deputation consisting of the principal Wairoa Chiefs, waited upon Major Lambert to-day, to express their opinions on the present position of affairs, in reference to the war with the Hau Haus on this Coast. The Chiefs present, were:- Paora te Apatu, Kerei, Tamihana Huata, Toha Hahu Hahu, Hoani te Wai Woha, Waiti Kai Moana, Hapimana, Hamana Tiaki Wai. They represented that the Taua had returned from Turanga, and with the intention of assailing Puketapu from here; that they would be prepared to start again as soon as they had in some degree recovered from their fatigue. They expressed a very unanimous opinion, - ''that the enemy should be followed up with vigor, without loss of time; that no permanent peace could be looked for until the enemy were entirely destroyed; that their destruction would be comparatively easy and certain if proceeded with at once.'' The whole tone of their remarks evinced the best spirit and friendship. They deprecated the appointment of Col. Whitmore to command on the East Coast; and stated their intention of addressing the Governor on the subject. I greatly fear, from their expressed views, that they would decline absolutely to work in unison with that Officer. I have the honor to remain, Sir, Your obedient servant (Signed) Geo. Worgan. To:- His Honor D. McLean Esq. Napier.
