Tuesday afternoon. 16th. Oct. 1857 My dear Maclean, We have received your note of today from Patumahoe. All is quiet here. You do not say whether you have any clue. Charon mentioned a case to me in which a Maori at Wangarei had committed suicide. The Maoris accused the Europeans of having murdered the man. The wounds were in the breast and head. Charon remarked that a piece of rag was attached to the toes of the corpse, having evidently been used to pull the trigger. But the gun was gone, which was a difficulty in the way of supposing a suicide It turned out that the Native had borrowed a gun of a young man, who suspecting something wrong went out and found the body. Knowing that his gun would be forfeited as having been the instrument of death he had carried it off, and kept quiet about what had happened. Such is Charon's tale. I repeat it to you as it may be of some use. Yours truly, C.W. Richmond.
